After successfully operating to Oberammergau in 1990 & 2000, This is the third season for Special Pilgrimages with The Passion Play. In between we have operated many departures to Oberammergau most notably in 2003 in partnership with Premier Christian Radio when we operated a Summer Celebration with almost 400 people including the famous All Souls Orchestra and Dr. Noël Tredinnick. We are very well know in the village and we have very advantageous contacts with the locals.
Oberammergau is a delightful alpine village, situated in Bavaria near the Austrian border, on the fast-flowing river Ammer with its crystal-clear waters and the rugged Kofel peak towering above. Towards the end of the thirty years war there was an outbreak of the plague in Bavaria. The elders of the village of Oberammergau, in an effort to protect their village, decided to seal it off from outside contact. But an itinerant worker returned, bringing the plague with him, and it swept through the village.
Whereupon the people solemnly vowed that, if God would show His compassion and lift the scourge, every ten years they would assemble and enact the Passion of our Lord.
The plague left the village in 1633 and, as a perpetual thanksgiving and reaffirmation of faith, the villagers of Oberammergau have performed the Passion Play at regular intervals ever since. Only local people can perform in the Passion Play. This is the first edition of Special Pilgrimages’ programme of Oberammergau holidays and is subject to change. We now invite party organisers to plan ahead and provisionally book space for their groups. All holidays include a performance of the Passion Play. Brochures with Booking Forms are expected at Easter 2008.
