Assisi

Today will be a full day guided visit in Assisi, the birth place of St. Francis the patron Saint of Italy and founder of the Franciscan order. Visit the town of St. Francis and his devout follower St. Clare. We start at San Damiano Church, which is the site of Saint Francis's conversion, where he obeyed the orders given to him by the Crucifix, which told him "Go forth Francis, and re-build my crumbling house", as well as where Saint Clare lived for 42 years. We also visit the Basilica of St. Clare. The Basilica is one of the most beautiful buildings in Assisi and is built on the same spot, where the Church of St. George stood. It was then incorporated into St. Clare's convent, where St. Francis was originally buried. Inside we see the original ‘San Damiano’ crucifix that spoke to Francis. Only later did St. Francis understand the deeper meaning of this dream, urging him to “rebuild My Church”. Francis interpreted the dream literally and went to work on repairing the building. We also visit the Tomb of St. Clare, whose body was found under the High Altar in 1850. This church was the first monastery of the  Order of Saint Clare, where Saint Clare built her community. The convent became the home of Saint Clare of Assisi and her followers in 1212. Work was carried out to provide buildings for this religious community and the sisters stayed until Clare's death in 1253, when it was thought too dangerous to remain. We then continue walking to Chiesa San Pietro,  an ancient Benedictine monastery for a visit.  Lunch in the vicinity (not included). In the afternoon, we visit the Basilica of Saint Francis (upper and lower Basilicas) where we will see the famous works of art, mostly attributed to Giotto and his pupils. Celebrate Mass in the Basilica of St. Francis at 16:00 hours (please note this is a concelebrated Mass). We will have some time to pray at the Tomb of St. Francis, before we return to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

The Basilica was constructed in the Mannerist style between 1569 and 1679, enclosing the 9th-century little church, the Porziuncola, the most sacred place for the Franciscans. It was here that the young Francis of Assisi understood his vocation and renounced the world in order to live in poverty amongst the poor, and thus starting the Franciscan movement. We then drive to Greccio village. Lunch in Greccio village (not included). In the afternoon, we visit Greccio, known throughout the world as the Franciscan Bethlehem and the place of the First Living Nativity. It is a powerful architectural complex, rising from the rocks 635 metres about sea level. Known throughout the world as the Franciscan Bethlehem, the Sanctuary, which is located at 635 meters above sea level, is a powerful architectural complex that seems to rise from the bare rock.
